Sarah Benioff Horowitz

Sarah Benioff was born about April 1860 probably in Ignatovka near Kiev. She married Morris Horowitz in Russia, and they had eight children: Alexander Eli, Benjamin, Simon, Harry, David, Bertha, Frederick, and Jacob.

I was told that Sarah made eye drops and other types of medications that she sold. She came to the US 28 November, 1891, arriving in New York on the Scandia from Hamburg. She brought along Alexander Eli, Simon, Harry, and David. I believe Benjamin died en-route. Bertha, Frederick, and Jacob were all born in New York City.

Morris came from a family of cattle dealers, but in the US he worked as a shirt-maker and a dry-goods merchant.

Morris and Sarah both died in Los Angeles; Morris on 10 October, 1939, and Sarah on 29 June, 1930. They are both buried at Home of Peace Memorial Park in East Los Angeles.

I invite you to send me any stories, memories, letters (even if untranslated), documents and photos concerning Sarah Benioff Horowitz and I will add them to this website.

Mabel Walker Willebrandt – was a law partner of Fred’s

Pioneer-Lucky Strike Gold Mining Company – court case that Fred and Dave were involved in

Hildegarde Topper was Al Horowitz’s wife…so Dave Topper would have been her brother

Harry’s 3 sons were:
Frederick Lester Horowitz
Clarence William Horowitz
Robert Lester “Bob” Horowitz

The Thomas Flyer was an early automobile – the accident took place in 1908 – on September 21, 1909, 13 year old Fred was awarded $2000 in damages (the suit was for $50,000) – against W.A. Morehouse – Simon Benioff, Fred’s uncle, and acting as his guardian, brought the suit against Mr. Morehouse – at the time of the accident, Fred was out trying his new kite which he invented to receive wireless messages.

I believe Al is mistaken, Jess Citron’s younger brother was named Joseph.
