Samuel Shulman was the nephew of Dina Rachel Shulman. He was a business man in Brazil and was having financial problems so Dina’s son Samuel Friedman lent him money to help him out. However, he gave them a lot of trouble paying it back which started a long correspondence between Mendl Friedman and Sam Friedman. It is complicated because Mendl and Samuel are not related through the Friedmans (another story). Mendl was in Rio and was helping navigate the repayment.
Back in the 1990’s Annette had a sent a check from the Dina Shulman Foundation to Manya Shulman’s family in Israel. Many was a daughter of Isak Shulman. Manya’s daughter Raya Miller, sent a thank you note and Annette gave it to me…but it got lost in the bottom of a box until I pulled it out about 20 years later. I sent a snail mail message to Raya and within days, her son called me on the phone! I was so excited to connect to this family because for years I had thought it was impossible to find out who they were.
This family I found through a DNA match. And as they had already done a lot of family tree work I could add a large part of their tree to mine. Brucha married Berel Tsukerman. Also, I found a letter, in Russian and when translated turned out to be from one of Brucha’s children. This letter also gave me a lot of information.
This family also I found through a DNA connection. I had discovered through research in Ukrainian archives that Alec married a woman named Chava Lembersky but was then divorced. The DNA match suggests that he then married Edith Kramer (Kaomer) and had a daughter Anna who married Benjamin Malamud.
