Ben Benioff
(1900-1992)
Leo Benioff was born 24 October, 1856 (or 19 September, 1861, depending on which source you believe) in Kieff to Benjamin Benioff and Bertha Morosow (Marov). He was probably the fourth of eight children. He arrived in New York in 1885 and married Nettie Kamarow in 1899. (The dates don’t quite add up. He was 28 when he got married according to his marriage certificate, which would mean he was born in 1871 rather than 1861, and that he emigrated at the age of 14). He and Nettie had four sons: Dave, Herman, Ben, and Julius (who died at one year old of enterocolitis and nephritis).
Leo arrived in NY August 14, 1885 was naturalized 27 July, 1906 in the Eastern District Court of New York.
While living in New York, Leo worked as a stationer, as a cigar dealer, in a candy store and as a paper box maker.
The family moved to Los Angeles around 1909, and Leo lived there for the remainder of his life where he was a dry-goods merchant. On his voter registration he called himself a socialist.
Leo and Nettie died in Los Angeles; Leo on 29 April, 1934, and Nettie on 12 November, 1957.
