Solve the Mystery

Help me find more information.

  1. What was the name of the ship Ike came on to the U.S.? The year was 1899.

Ike Levy

Ike Levy was born 15 January, 1873, in Drohitchen, Belarus, son of Avraham Levy and brother of Shmuel Levy and Meyer Levy (and possibly, Golda Levy).

He got married, at the age of 21 to Rachel. Rachel’s maiden name is variously written as Cohen, Beyer and Schwartz.

They were married in NYC on 1 Dec 1901 in Manhattan.

He came to the US  on the SS “Kospere”, sailing from Bremen, Germany, arriving in NY on 14 April, 1899. (I am currently not finding a ship of that name”.

He was naturalized in May of 1911.

The couple had two daughters, Rose Levy (1903-1979) and Etta Levy (1908-1966).

Both Ike and Rachel were tailors.

On his WWI draft registration (1918) it says he is of medium height, slender build, with brown eyes and black hair.

On his WWII draft registration (1942), it says he is white, 5’4″, 150 lbs, with brown eyes and grey hair.

Ike died 2 February, 1950 in New York and was buried with his wife Rachel at the Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY.

I invite you to send me any stories, memories, letters (even if untranslated), documents and photos concerning Ike Levy and I will add them to this website.

Gravestone of Ike and Rachel Levy
Gravestone of Ike and Rachel Levy - the Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY

Translation of Headstone:

Here lies Yitzchak, son of Reb Avraham
He passed away 15 Shvat 5710
May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

Here lies Rachel, daughter of Reb Shmuel.
She passed away 8 Nisan 5721.
May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

When I went to Beth David Cemetery for my sister-in-law's unveiling, in the Drohitchin society plots, I found the only Levy graves that the office told me were there. It was a couple Ike and Rachel Levy. I remember my father telling me that Shmuel Levy had brothers that came to America. I'm pretty sure that one of names he told me was Ike. Lo and behold when I found the grave and brushed away the bushes growing in front of the grave it said in Hebrew son of Avrohom, which was Shmuel Levy's father's name. That must be his brother.
