Friedman
Sol and Sam
Sol and Sam Friedman came from Kopaigorod in western Ukraine by boat in 1913. Sol was 16, and Sam was 17. They landed in Galveston, Texas. They traveled with the Kibrick boys from their town, took a train from Galveston to San Francisco, and started a business repairing burlap bags. In a few years, they had moved to Hermosillo, Mexico where they lived until about 1926, waiting to get Visas for the entire family. Eventually, the Friedmans settled in Los Angeles and started the Friedman Bag Company.
SF Friedmans
It is important to distinguish the LA or Los Angeles Friedmans (my father’s family) from the SF or San Francisco Friedmans which is less directly related. The origins of the LA Friedmans do not align with those of the SF Friedmans. The progenitor of the SF Friedmans arrived in a town near Kopaigorod, having traveled from some other place in the Russian Empire and was apparently not related to the Kopaigorod Friedman family which lived in Mogilov Podolsk and Kopaigorod since at least the mid 1700s. However the two families are related.

Family Gallery
This company picnic took place around 1940. The voices you hear are myself, my sister Karen, and my aunts Linda, Beatrice and Annette, watching the movie and trying to figure out who everyone is.
