Hess

Levi Hess (1812-1882)
Levi Hess (1812-1882)

Levi Hess came to New Orleans from Germany around 1835.

He married Theresa Sanger from Alsace. The couple settled in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. They had at least two enslaved persons (Ruthe and Miley). They had three sons and five daughters between 1835 and 1849. Levi had a dry goods store in Baton Rouge along with David Sanger and Simon Jacobi, both of whom were probably his brothers-in-law. In 1850, Theresa Sanger Hess died, and the family moved to San Francisco where Levi married Ricka Wertheimer.
