Channa Ita Gratch Levy

Channa Ita Gratch was the daughter of Shimon Gratch and Bela Eisenstein. She was born in the town of Drogichin, in Belarus, in about 1856. She married Reb Shmuel Levy probably around 1871 while still in Belarus. Sometime between 1886 and 1891 the family moved to Jerusalem (the dates come from birthdates of their children). Six of their 8 children were born in Belarus and the remaining two in Jerusalem.

Shmuel was often away…fundraising in the US for the school and guest house he was building in the Mea Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Channa never came to the US. She died in Jerusalem in 1922, and was buried in the Mount of Olives Cemetery with her husband Shmuel.

I invite you to send me any stories, memories, letters (even if untranslated), documents and photos concerning Channa Ita Gratch Levy and I will add them to this website.

Libe: My Grandfather (Reb Shmuel Levy) was in the United States. They had a big house. It was about a three story house and there was a table that could seat about thirty, forty people. He used to be a man’s tailor. He wasn’t a tailor anymore, but everybody could come there and the kids used to always go there.

There was always enough food. She would cook about five gallons of peas and milk for dinner. There was tea and there was fruit and there was always bread. On Saturday, everybody had bread. She had flour—somehow, to make bread, because she couldn’t afford to buy it. The bought bread was fresh and tasty, so the kids ate more.
