Solve the Mystery

Help me find more information.

  1.  In the photo of two young men in the photo below, Alexander is on the left. Who is on the right, his brother Benjamin? Was the photo taken in Russia?
  2. What does the L. in his name stand for?
  3. What does the M. in his wife Stella’s name stand for.
  4. Where did they get the middle name of Belaire for their daughter Millicent.

Alexander L. Benioff

Alexander Benioff was my 1st cousin 2x removed.

In the 1900 census, Alexander says he was born in NYC. I find this unlikely as his father Isaac J. Benioff didn’t come to the US until 1886 and Alexander was born before that in 1878. His mother was Molly Breiness. She died in Russia and Isaac remarried Anne Fierkelman. Alex was most likely born in Russia as was his brother Benjamin. He married Stella M. Silverstein on 16 February, 1905 in San Francisco. Miss Silverstein was said to have an excellent voice which had been heard in concerts. They had one daughter, Millicent Belaire Benioff on 24 December, 1906 in New York. Millicent went on to have a good singing career.

Alexander was a furrier and traveled extensively, most likely to obtain furs (especially wolf and coyote), from New York to California, Washington, British Columbia, Montana and more. He obtained a homestead in Canada, applied for in 1891, granted in 1894. In 1903, he bought a parcel of land in Delaware from Isaac and Ida. After he died, in 1913, the land was sold from his daughter’s estate back to Isaac and Ida for $1200.   He died of Tuberculosis and Kidney Disease in Colorado Springs, CO at The Glockner Tuberculosis Sanatorium at the age of 31 and is buried in Colma, California at the Salem Cemetery.

I invite you to send me any stories, memories, letters (even if untranslated), documents and photos concerning Alexander L. Benioff and I will add them to this website.
